Is decision fatigue real science?

The popular mechanism is not. The willpower-as-fuel model failed a 23-laboratory preregistered replication in 2016 with more than 2,000 participants, and a second multi-lab attempt in 2019 with more than 3,000. What survived is that decision quality degrades as decision volume climbs, and that expectation about mental capacity shapes how steeply it falls.

Does AI reduce or increase executive decision load?

Both, depending on structure. AI removes execution work and adds evaluation work, and evaluation is a decision. The BCG Henderson Institute study published in Harvard Business Review, March 2026, surveying 1,488 full-time US workers, found that heavy AI oversight came with 19% more information overload and 12% more mental fatigue than light oversight.

How many AI tools can one leader oversee before it backfires?

In the BCG data, perceived productivity rose moving from one tool to two, continued rising at three, then declined as tools stacked beyond that. The stronger predictor was not tool count but the ratio of oversight to delegation. Supervision consumes capacity. Delegation returns it.

What should an executive protect in the first two hours of the day?

One decision, named the night before. The highest-consequence decision available should be made before absorption starts, while decision volume is still low. Everything else in that window waits until later in the morning.

How does a leader's decision load reach the team?

Through range and tone rather than through announcements. A leader arriving with low capacity holds fewer alternatives, closes conversations faster, and reads dissent as delay. Teams register the narrowing and often interpret it as something unspoken and wrong, which shows up later as an engagement number rather than a load number.

Why Does the Day Feel Lost Before It Starts?

Q: Why does the day feel lost before it starts?

Because the day starts before the calendar does. Leaders process threats, rehearse rooms, and clear small choices privately before the first meeting, so capacity is already spent when the meeting asks for it. The day is not lost. It is spent, which is a different problem with a visible budget.
