Cultural Competence
Achieving Better Results with Cultural Competence
Cultural Competence Training:
Each of us views the world through our own “cultural lenses” created by us through our own personal knowledge and experiences, or imposed on us by our community, and society.
Most of the time, no matter how accepting and open-minded we can be, we are not aware of our own lenses that can mask our personal bias and prejudice. Most critically, we forget to realize or recognize that others wear their own cultural lenses too; and that their lenses may be different than ours.
Eye contact, head movements, hand gestures, personal physical distance, handshake styles and even silence meaning can vary by culture.
Culture Competence Definition
What is Culture Competence?
Role of Religion in the Latino Culture
These lenses are called “Cultures”. Before embarking on the Culture journey; the definition of culture and its effect on our thoughts, behaviors, attitudes, perceptions, beliefs and actions should be clarified.
Culture is not black and white and is not only about race or ethnicity or even gender, but it includes every single character that makes our diverse world unique. Different genders, generations, abilities and disabilities, different socio-economic factors, different education levels, different marital or parental status, and different military and veteran status have each their own culture.
To develop a sensitivity, awareness and understanding towards these different cultures is the subject of our workshop about “Cultural Competence”
Cultural Competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations. 'Culture' refers to integrated patterns of human behavior that include the language, thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups. 'Competence' implies having the capacity to function effectively as an individual and an organization within the context of the cultural beliefs, behaviors, and needs presented by different people and their communities
The first and most important step toward successful interaction with others whose lenses are different from our own is to become aware of the presence and the impact of these lenses in our daily attitudes and professional behaviors.
Developing an understanding of our cultural biases, fears and stereotypes, and how they affect our perceptions and interactions with each other in the workplace, is a giant step toward reducing stress and increasing productivity.
The purpose of our “Cultural Competence” workshop is to encourage interaction between your employees in order to stimulate D.I.A.L.O.G.™and increase understanding and employee engagement to create a positive work environment.
Our workshop is interactive based on our D.I.A.L.O.G.™ rules of engagement to help the participants to openly communicate, inspire each other, tap into the imagination and find solutions to challenging issues together.
